How can conscience be inner vanity when conscience normally is like the school report "Could do better". Vanity flatters.

Conscience is most definitely NOT inner vanity.
I have nothing against Gustave Flaubert and his head-cold portrait, but it seems to me that Daemon could broaden his horizons a bit more and glean from the vast universe of great quotes some finer gems. We've had an inordinate number of quotes from Flaubert lately. For that matter, it seems like our "quote pool" in general is a rather small and shallow one. I appreciate the daily quotes, but perhaps it's time to branch out a bit.

It seems that recently, there have been a LOT of quotes from Gustave Flaubert.
If I remember correctly, several people across history have uttered something quoteworthy.

Can we change it up a little?

Vanity of vanities, all is vanity - especially when you make it the basis of everything...

The whole world pivots around the collective conscience of mankind. If it were vanity, then the whole would crumble down..

I do. They could at least find a better depiction of the man.

Better yet, quote someone else!

Like most ppl here, I don't agree with the quote. I wonder if it was taken out of context.

That explains what one calls remorse as being only outer vanity.
