Somewhat akin to "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy".

Morally and ethically , solitaire ,Quiet as the breezes that guide you;. Alone,all except your thoughts and imagination unto which you yield in times of need. NEVER YIELD, they say, aaahhhh but think of all the fun we would miss out on. I don't think we are ever really alone. ..........................................................().

Be bad and you will be accompanied, not expressly befriended.

I am confused. I was taught to be good since I can remember only to find that that training has no job openings.

Be good and you will be lonesome. ~Mark Twain.
Literary twist is that the result of being good is loneliness. But, what is implied by "being good" , and what by "being lonely" ? Lets take the instance that "being good" means "being benevolent". If one is benevolent, than one is generous. If one is generous, than he/she is giving ones own, same time loosing ones surroundings, thus becoming deserted or, in other words, lonely.... ?

Be good and you will be lonesome. --Mark Twain (1835-1910)

I am sorry Mr. Clemens, but I think this quote is misleading at best.

In one sense, the only thing that rather makes sense about this quote is the fact that being good might bring about loneliness is the fact that you'll have to separate your old connections with those who don't do so much good. Perhaps this could be lonely, but its a good kind of loneliness, for separating connections with the ignorant is in itself like making friends with the learned and the wise.

In another sense, what you "do", whether is good or bad, bring more of those people that do the same thing around you. So, lets say you are a drinker, and just became one. At first, you may not know so many people, but you've made drinking your "main event" in your life. Eventually, you will know many other drinkers. That's just how life is.

So by doing good, even if you're lonely at first, you won't be lonely for so long. You will meet other good people, and by keeping company of good people, you will develop goodness in your character, and by avoiding the company of wicked persons you will abstain from wickedness.

And finally, by doing good, you will make friends with the Friend, and He dies not

who is responsible for this brilliant insight: "It is better to be hated for who you are than loved for who you are not." and of course I agree.

It's a quote from Kurt Cobain, but I miss quoted it. He said "I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not."

Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
Weep, and you weep alone.
For the sad old earth must borrow it's mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.
Sing, and the hills will answer;
Sigh, it is lost on the air.
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
But shrink from voicing care.

Rejoice, and men will seek you;
Grieve, and they turn and go.
They want full measure of all your pleasure,
But they do not need your woe.
Be glad, and your friends are many;
Be sad, and you lose them all.
There are none to decline your nectared wine,
But alone you must drink life's gall.

Feast, and your halls are crowded;
Fast, and the world goes by.
Succeed and give, and it helps you live,
But no man can help you die.
There is room in the halls of pleasure
For a long and lordly train,
But one by one we must all file on
Through the narrow aisles of pain.
