Recognizing the regularity of celestial motions, early civilizations made attempts to keep records of them, resulting in the first practical function of astronomy: to form the calendar. The Chinese had a working calendar as early as the 13th century BCE. Around 350 BCE, astronomer Shih Shen prepared the earliest known star catalog, containing 800 entries.
