Sublime is the dominion of the mind over the body, that for a time, can make flesh and nerve impregnable, and string the sinews like steel, so that the weak become so mighty.

I decided that it was not wisdom that enabled poets to write their poetry, but a kind of instinct or inspiration, such as you find in seers and prophets who deliver all their sublime messages without knowing in the least what they mean.

There is only one step from the sublime to the ridiculous.

I am one who believes that the world goes from the slime to the sublime. And you can take Darwin and all your philosophers and all your ontologists, and that's the direction.

Context from UNCLE TOM'S CABIN

The Mother's Struggle

"Yes, _sure_!" said the mother, in a voice that startled herself; for it seemed to her to come from a spirit within, that was no part of her; and the boy dropped his little weary head on her shoulder, and was soon asleep. How the touch of those warm arms, the gentle breathings that came in her neck, seemed to add fire and spirit to her movements! It seemed to her as if strength poured into her in electric streams, from every gentle touch and movement of the sleeping, confiding child. Sublime is the dominion of the mind over the body, that, for a time, can make flesh and nerve impregnable, and string the sinews like steel, so that the weak become so mighty.

When you think your mind is over the body, it is really the body over the mind.

Sublime, I guess, can work in both directions of a "strong-weak" alley...

The quotation made more sense before I saw the context. I have not read the book, only know of it. I can totally see the view that she has it backwards. But then the mind and the body have a symbiotic relationship. I would be hard put to decide which was the greater influence.

It looks as if Ms. Stowe is bestowed with a beard in this picture. She is actally a very strong but gentle woman.
