Ah, wise Wharton! Indeed, it does.

A lamented silence, it may be safe to presume, would have much less light, in contrast to being in a silence of, let's say, perfect peace.

It is not appropriate to remain silent when when the situation demands.

It does make sense to me. Think of the silence that overtakes a conversation when someone says something that leaves the others in the conversation speachless because it is so profound or so outrageous they don't know how to respond. Or the wonderful and comfortable silence between two people who are just enjoying being together and feel no need for words. That is two very different kinds of silence.

[left]The very word silence can be unfolded in a myriad of facets.Silence as the lack of communication between two lovers is a manifest proof of anger, hostility, disinterest, ire, pain from both sides. For silence is like a poderous slab of marble encumbering one's soul and heart, associated with confusion, questions without any answer whatsoever. Moreover, silence may be a result of hesitation, shutters, correction of speech.Silence can also be a sign of ignorance when involved in a conversation, but it can also mean the very opposite.More often than not, people value silence, since it can mean one's elevation of character, spirit, intellect. We hardly ever feel the need to share what we know with others, for our whole universe is transposed within ourselves.
Besides, silence also leaves plenty of room for ambiguity, since our interlocutor may be confused by silence, therefore ignorance or wit are left shrouded in mystery.According to Francis Bacon,"Dicretion in speech is more than eloquence".
