Nebuta Matsuri

Nebuta Matsuri, the main festival of Aomori Prefecture in Japan, features processions of huge, elaborately painted papier-mâché figures called nebuta. In the capital city of Aomori, the nebuta figures, up to 49 feet wide and 26 feet high, depict ferociously scowling samurai warriors. Illuminated from within by candles, they glow as they are carried through the streets at nightfall. Spectators wear hats made of flowers and dance in the streets. More...

Nebuta Matsuri (ねぶた祭)

The highlight of the festival is the daily parade of enormous lantern floats, flanked by large taiko drums, musicians and dancers. The Nebuta Matsuri together with Akita's Kanto Matsuri and Sendai's Tanabata make up the Tohoku Sandai Matsuri (Three Great Festivals of the Tohoku Region).
Local teams build the festival's two dozen floats, which are constructed of painted washi paper over a wire frame and take an entire year to design and construct. They can be up to nine meters wide and five meters tall and often depict gods, historical or mythical figures from both Japanese and Chinese culture, kabuki actors, and characters from the popular NHK Taiga Drama historical TV series.

Festival of Light: Experiencing the Nebuta Matsuri

Aomori Prefecture abounds in the sort of beauty typical of rural Japan: orderly pastoral landscapes and rolling mountains. Big and bold, the Nebuta Matsuri forms a dramatic contrast with this tranquil setting. It is a festival of bright lights and exuberant celebration, when the rhythms of taiko drums, screeching flutes, and hand cymbals stir the blood and dozens of festival floats (nebuta) set the main streets of the city colorfully ablaze. For a few days, energy and excitement run riot through the normally quiet city.
