Can anyone untangle this one? Maybe I'm just not looking at it properly, but I'm having a little trouble untangling what he's trying to say here.

I agree, this quote is a tough nut to crack. If anyone knows the original context of the quote perhaps that would lend an additional sense of meaning.

If I'd written this in an essey, my teacher would doubtless have commented, "Explain, please." But I guess it means whatever one wants it to mean. Tolstoy may have been a genius, but he probably had 'off' days, too. That or a sense of humour!

The quote is from My religion(also called What I believe), chapter 12
link
Tolstoy advises people to live as what he thinks Christ wanted; for example to refuse military service and being peaceful with those who attack them. (Much like what Jehova Witnesses want.) These are the deeds of truths against the compact mass of people who, by perpetuating these errors, live a non-Christian life.

Thank you, bogdanno. This quote makes far more sense to me now.
