Synonyms: sleepless, watchful

Usage: Every night, I'm woken by the sound of creaking floorboards as my insomniac husband leaves for another late-night snack.

Insomniac, is an example of an orphan negative, an adjective used in the negative only. "Inept" and "inane", are other examples. There is no "somniac," "ept" or "ane." A short and amusing story illustrating orphan negatives can be found at
