This seems to be similar to the topic on "couple". The verb depends on whether media is seen as a single entity, or as a group.

In my experience, the media is treated as a single entity, so "treats" is used, as in "The media (It) treats celebrities unfairly..." .

If, however, media is thought of as a group, then you would say, "The media (They) treat celebrities unfairly..." . I can't recall anyone ever saying it this way.

Also plural celebrities have plural private lives. One each.

I agree when you are lumping the whole industry together like this, then 'the media' is singular.

It has a different meaning in this usage from the plural of medium. It can be a singular concept in its own right.
When it is people, lots of journalists, tv people etc, then it can be plural. It depends on how much you are treating the media industry as a single unit in each particular context.
