Hi teachers,
I wonder if "become one", "exist together" and "are united" make sense as explanations for "are joined" in the following definition?

What is a contraction?
A contraction is when two words are joined, and one or more letters are removed and replaced with an apostrophe. They are commonly used in informal written English and spoken English.

Thanks.

Alternatives: concatenated, combined. The word "joined" is a very good choice though.

I think "joined" is simplest. Or "joined together", which is tautological but often said!

Though very good, I think I would add this part:

What is a contraction?
A contraction is when two words are joined into one word/are joined and made into one word, and one or more letters are removed and replaced with an apostrophe. They are commonly used in informal written English and spoken English.

Thanks.

I do appreciate all your comments, Bathcoup, Audiendus and, FounDit. Now I have a more accurate picture of my question.

David.
