(1) Well do I remember the day when I first saw the Southern Cross in Australia.
(From a grammar book for Japanese high school students)

Does this sentence sound stilted in everyday conversation?

(2) I remember well the day I first saw the Southern Cross in Australia.

Does this sentence sound natural in everyday conversation?

Yes, sentence (1) does sound a rather stilted in everyday conversation; and sentence (2) does sound natural. The "when" is not needed in sentence (1).

A third option, "I well remember the day....", sounds a little less natural than sentence (2), but not as stilted as sentence (1)

I would be more likely to hear...
"I remember very well the day I first saw..."

edit--
Sometimes you'll hear...
"How well I remember when(the day I...)..."
