Is that why they call the game Scrabble? Because you put all the letter tiles in a bag and grope for seven of them?

Yes I think they had the literal meaning of the word in mind as well as its catchiness when they chose the name. The game was originally called Lexiko, later Criss Cross Words before being developed as Scrabble right after WWII.
