Gadzooks is an expression of surprise. So this is a made-up word meaning the action creating that surprise. along the pattern of adding -ery to make the noun fakery, chicanery, tomfoolery Quote:gadzooks /ɡadˈzuːks/ exclamation ARCHAIC an exclamation of surprise or annoyance. Old-fashioned, certainly but I would't call it archaic!

Ah, never come across that. But no reason I would, I suppose. I can't imagine I would encounter it in comments about historical novels. Context is everything, as ever. [I still quite like my interpretation, even if it doesn't exist!} But the point is that it being in historical novels make it a word people know, and it has such a nice sound. A quality expression never goes out of style.
