He fumbled behind him for the catch on the door.

Does catch mean "a knob" or "a handle" or something else?

I couldn't find a specific meaning.

It’s not a knob or a handle, it’s a part of the door that keeps it closed when shut.
There are a number of styles of catches that you can buy, some use magnets others are mechanical devices.
