Hi,

Can "in his early years" refer to one's childhood in the following?

John lived in the countryside in his early years.

I'd appreciate your help.

It can mean his childhood, or his early years as a young adult. If we are talking about an artist - poet, musician, painter... "his early years" usually refer to his first works in his career.

The early years of an artist or composer--that is, when they are beginning their creative careers--are earlier for some than for others. Mozart, for example, was a virtuoso musician and composer before he was 10 years old, but the American folk artist "Grandma Moses" (Anna Mary Robertson Moses [1860 - 1961]) didn't begin her painting career until she was in her late 70s (though she had shown interest in art as a child).
