The deep flaming water
Is cradling a swan
But shoreward it shortly
Will float back alone

Is "shoreward" a correct word? Does it work as "to the shore"?

Thanks!

almost. -ward is towards, so not quite the same as 'to' (where you reach it). You can head shoreward without getting to the shore.

There are many words where it has traditionally been attached, and you can potentially add it to others
eg commonly homeward - towards home

Hello Narkom.
thar is right -"shoreward" means "in the direction of the shore" or "towards the shore", not quite "to the shore".

However, in your poem, it sounds good.
It makes sense.
