Rotherhithe is on the south side of the Thames in London, and it is where the first tunnel under the river was built by Brunel

used as a really cool performance venue

In north London there is Arsenal Station, on the Picadilly line. It was named that in 1932 because that is where the Arsenal football club is. Before that it was Gillespie Road, and on the original tiles inside the station, the name is still there.

But the outside has changed

The branding and signage is presumably huge to show away fans, including those from foreign countries, where to go. It is not normally that big on other stations.

it is an interesting cultural difference, isn't it, between the countries being as modern and innovative as they can, and the countries trying to preserve the past, like keeping tiling from nearly a hundred years ago, even while updating the infrastructure.

[Very bad] Artist's impression of an envisioned part-underground railway link between Keflavík Airport and Reykjavík (bus station)

The idea has been around a while, but it is still being planned - start in 2022 is the newest prediction, after more detailed geological/feasibility reports etc. [No active volcanoes between Keflavík and Reykjavík so they shouldn't run into any squidgy bits - but that would make for a really interesting train ride, wouldn't it!]

Not everyone is impressed with the ambition.

This from 2015

Quote:
News has surfaced that a group of private investors are looking into the possibilities of building a high-speed rail link between Keflavik Airport and BSÍ Reykjavík.

Currently, everyone landing in the airport is either picked up by relatives or friends in cars (if they’re Icelandic) or shepherded onto coaches (if they’re not) for the 40 minute drive into the city.

For an estimated cost of 105 billion ISK (or around 37 million Euros), customers of the new 250kph railway would shave a whopping 22 minutes off the journey, going over land to the city limits, where the track would enter a tunnel before arriving in an underground station at BSÍ.

This would, however, involve wiping out a large area of the spectacular lava field between Keflavik and Reykjavík. It’s often remarked upon that this sight makes arrival in Iceland feel like coming to an unfamiliar “somewhere else”, and that landing at Keflavik feels like landing “on the moon”. This perceived wildness and difference would without question be reduced by a familiar, banal train commute into the city.

clearly not a fan!
