Synonyms: evade, hedge, skirt, parry, fudge, circumvent, dodge, elude, duck, put off

Usage: The candidate tried to sidestep the issue during the debate, but eventually he had to make his position clear.

The newly transferred high school students were having a
challenging time adjusting to the new district , as a
result , they would sidestep one-on-one encounters
with certain students and teachers.
