Ishani, if you bite into a peach you may unexpectedly bite down hard on the stone(pip) in the middle of the peach and so jar your teeth. Hope this is clear enough if not ask again, Applause good students ask lots of questions!!

She was a writer and that's the best she could do when writing this?

Context from: Adam Bede - (1859)

Chapter XV
The two bed-chambers

It was very much in this way that our friend Adam Bede thought about Hetty; only he put his thoughts into different words. If ever she behaved with cold vanity towards him, he said to himself it is only because she doesn't love me well enough; and he was sure that her love, whenever she gave it, would be the most precious thing a man could possess on earth. Before you despise Adam as deficient in penetration, pray ask yourself if you were ever predisposed to believe evil of any pretty woman — if you ever COULD, without hard head-breaking demonstration, believe evil of the ONE supremely pretty woman who has bewitched you. No: people who love downy peaches are apt not to think of the stone, and sometimes jar their teeth terribly against it.

Comment:
the narrator makes this observation about Adam’s love of Hetty. Like the peach, Hetty is pretty and soft on the outside but inside has a hardness that does not match her outward appearance. Adam does not perceive the hardness on the inside. He believes Hetty must be as beautiful inside as outside. For that reason, Adam is even more injured when Hetty turns out to have acted in an immoral way, both in her affair with Captain Donnithorne and in the killing of her own child.

Yeah. A few broken teeth can't thwart people who really love downy peaches...

Thanks everyone, I have now grasped the whole meaning of the sentence. I find it true and beautifully written.

In my point of view, the meaning of this quote is:
- The people who are accustomed to soft and juicy fruits are prone to forget that there is a stone inside of them.
- This is possible regarded to situations in life when we are more used to and, so that, we became to be more relentless and careless, sometimes, being trapped into a bad outcome.
- One example, commuting on a daily basis from home to work, one person can feel comfortable not being aware of a some danger in the road and by driving careless, because of this routine activity, might be exposed to this danger without being warned.

Why are these quotes always taken as philosophical musings about life, when they are just lines in a story?

Men fancy pretty girls - Get hurt when they turn out to be bitches.

She (the author) was not a downy peach!
She was not a great believer in the goodness of human nature, either, judging by her novels. The lucky characteristics end up dead - the rest have to suffer being in love! Whistle
