The future of the duchy depended on her marriage. In desperation Anne allied herself with Maximilian of Austria,King of the Romans, who married her by proxy on Dec. 19, 1490.

Considering that her marriage was a breach of the treaty of Le Verger, the King of France sent in his army. After winning several battles, Charles VIII laid siege to Rennes in order to force Anne to renounce the marriage. After several weeks of siege, the King was successful and their betrothal was quickly celebrated in Rennes.
