Tragic event. Native nations in many regions had no immunity against European diseases and (figuratively speaking) against European cultural and economic influences.

From the article:

"A previous study suggested the pathogen responsible for the epidemic originated in Mexico, and that the epidemic was exacerbated by drought. And, Bos notes, "the Europeans who were observing the symptoms didn't know what it was, and Europeans got it as well," which suggests it wasn't a disease endemic to Europe."

So it could just have easily have been native to Mexico. But why let possible facts get in the way of blaming Europeans. BTW, I find it curious that the Native Americans in Mexico adopted the language, customs and religion of their European conquerors, while adopting resentment to the European conquerors North of them (French/English); it must have been a hold-over from the Spanish-English/Napoleonic wars of 1585-1604, 1796-1808. The roots of that resentment are still bringing forth fruit today in some quarters.

Living near the border one doesn't see it much except in very rare instances (99% of us get along just fine). However, the farther from the border one goes, the more pronounced the resentment becomes. By the time one reaches Washington, D.C., (or that mental institution known as California) it has morphed into insanity.
