Zwiebelmarkt

Zwiebelmarkt is a great celebration of onions in Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The onion market is said to date back to the great fire of 1405, after which farmers of Fribourg were given the right to sell their products in Bern because they helped rebuild the city (though the first documented mention of onions came in the middle of the 19th century). Farmers at hundreds of stalls offer for sale more than 100 tons of strings of onions, as well as other winter vegetables and nuts. There are confetti battles, people dressed in disguises, and jesters doing satires of the year's events. More...

Traditional onion market in Weimar
For the 362nd time the famed Thüringen onion market will be expecting hundreds of thousands of visitors this weekend. Even Goethe was once a fan.

The onion is the star of this annual show held on the second weekend of October. No mere vegetable are these beauties; plaited together in the traditonal ways and decorated with dried flowers. More than 500 market stands have already been set up in the town center. And a variety of musicians will provide music on several open-air stages. The market was first recorded in 1653, when it was known as the "Beasts and Onions Market." The townsfolk regularly bought their winter provisions at the market. Germany's national poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the market right in front of his house on the Frauenplan. He liked to attach ropes of onions to his writing desk, as well as hanging them elsewhere as decoration. Onions are good for you, the poet liked to say.
