Sheep learned to recognize photos of Obama and other celebrities, neuroscientists say

Of the roughly 1.1 billion sheep on Earth, roughly 1.1 billion have no idea who Barack Obama is. But there are at least eight sheep who can recognize the former president by his face. After a few days of training at the University of Cambridge in ... More...

It's Pavlov's theory at work and nothing that where our money is spent on research?

I guess 'simple psychology' has a new name, 'Neuroscientists'...give me a break! d'oh! LOL

I vote for money to be better spent in finding a cure for cancer, mental illness, Alzheimers, women's maladies (morning sickness, menopause, breast cancer, etc.), instead of ED, and I'm not talking about EDUCATION...I'm talking about ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION!
Give me a break...d'oh! Guess it's still a man's world, Mr. Guarino.

This study was to learn about Huntington's Disease. A rare disease but those who have it will be grateful for any knowledge. And often there are unexpected accidents in science that arise that help in areas unrelated.

Animals feel pain, they feel grief, they mourn for members of their dead families. They have memories. Experiments with hawks show that human facial memory can be passed to offspring when the offspring never saw the face before. Animals can learn how to solve problems, remember for a couple of years, and even use that knowledge to adapt the problem solving to a slightly different situation to solve it. Elephant and octopus experiments come to mind.

Other animals besides humans have learned through various methods to do facial recognition - something Huntingdon's patients have trouble with.

Animals are sentient beings and the way we treat those raised for human consumption needs to be changed as well.

All the studies of the unknown abilities of animals need to wake humankind up to the fact that humans are really only animals that have adapted to the world and evolved to be the most proficient animal that is scattered all over the world.

In fact we are too numerous with religious edicts of churches promoting more and more births as if we don't do that automatically already.

We are on the way to doing the same thing to ourselves that we have done to other animals. Many species are extinct and almost extinct because of human greed. Other animals know enough not to foul their own nest. Man has not learned that and still finds the need to fight science about climate disruption.

Many animals are better adapted in ways other than humans. We may have speech but our eyesight and olfactory glands are very lacking as compared to other animals. The dog is an excellent example we are all aware of. They can spot drugs and other substances when trained, can trace almost anything including lost humans, and even smell cancer.

Humans are learning to stop being so arrogant about our position as number one animal as scientists learn more and more about the abilities of animals and are using their knowledge to advance conditions for humans, while trying not to harm animals during the experiments. Maybe it is not the animals that are "stupid" because they can't communicate with us. Maybe it is humans who are "stupid" because we can't hear what they are telling us.

So these experiments and studies are worthwhile, and while helping us to understand animals, help us to understand all humans too.
