"[S]tudying the retarding effects that castration had on eunuchs(...)".

I read in a copy of one book which is more than 900 years old, that "It is possible to make a eunuch from a man, but nobody ever succeeded to make a man from a eunuch".

The saying above cannot be applied to women, and I don't know relevant statement applicable to women.

I have read Bulgakov's and Conan Doyle's stories many times, but never did I suspect that their characters had the real-life prototype.

Speaking as an English pedant (and with no disrespect to the great people who take the time to write wikipedia pages, which we take for granted) I must say that "studying the effects of castration on eunuchs" is not going to yield much.
Castrating a eunuch is not even possible. That ship has already sailed! Whistle
