GUIDELINES FOR USERS
Welcome to TheFreeDictionary Language Forums. These forums provide users from around the world with a platform for exchanging information about vocabulary, grammar, language, translations, culture, science, computing, and finance. These guidelines are designed to help you understand what TheFreeDictionary.com expects from you as a poster. Before submitting your post(s), please read this page.
Use the “Forum Search” feature to find posts related to your topic before beginning a new thread. You may find that your topic is already being discussed or that your question has already been answered.
There are a number of sections in this forum, each of which is devoted to a specific topic or set of topics. Please be careful to always use the correct section when posting. Topics posted in the wrong section will be moved to the correct one. If you post excessively in the wrong section, you will receive a warning.
All posts in the English section must be in English. In forums dedicated to other languages, posts must be composed in the appropriate language.
One Topic per Thread
Stay on topic. If you want to discuss a related subject that is different from the on raised in the first post of the thread, open a new thread. If you wish to talk about an unrelated subject or make an unrelated comment to another member, use the forum’s private message (PM) feature.
There is a distinction between a forum and a chat room, and while we try to maintain a casual and friendly atmosphere on the site, thread posts must be appropriate for forum publication. Within the forums, we ask that you keep posts on topic and avoid personal conversations with individual members. If you would like to discuss a topic with a user that is not appropriate for the forum, you can send him/her a private message (PM).
No Double Posting
Open only one thread for each question. Please do not double post, and do not duplicate threads. Duplicate discussions will be deleted without notice. Also, do not post just to increase your post count, points, or rank.
No Offensive Language/Flaming
The use of inappropriate or offensive language is not permitted on our site. Inappropriate or offensive language includes, but is not limited to, any language or content that is vulgar, obscene, abusive, defamatory, harassing, hateful, profane, slanderous, lewd, pornographic, sexually suggestive, violent, or contains racially, ethnically, or otherwise objectionable content. Do not post any content that violates any International laws or regulations. Posts which TheFreeDictionary’s moderators or administrators consider to be inappropriate or offensive will be edited or deleted at the staff’s discretion. Insulting, threatening, and harassing comments will not be tolerated. Anyone who uses inappropriate language, starts a personal attack, or engages in hate speech will be barred from the forums. Users who repeatedly disregard any of these guidelines may be banned from our forums.
Grammar, Spelling, Punctuation
This is an educational forum, thus proper spelling, capitalization, grammar, and punctuation are critical. Except as a topic of discussion, chatspeak (txt) is not acceptable.
No Spam or URL Dropping
Spam, flooding, advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are forbidden on this forum. Do not come here to drop the URL of your website or to promote yourself on our forums. If you wish to share a relevant URL with members of the forum, you may do so by explaining what the site is and why it is relevant to the topic being discussed.
No plagiarized content is allowed. Minor fair use excerpts of copyrighted materials are permitted, but you must always acknowledge the source.
These forums do not provide free schoolwork, translations, or revisions of texts. Genuine questions about grammar and translation for educational purposes are allowed, but users who abuse this system will have their posts deleted and may be banned from the forums.

Each user may register with one username only. Profile information must be appropriate and accurate. Rules regarding offensive/obscene content also apply to profile information. (See above section titled “No Offensive Language/Flaming.”) Any information the forum administrators/moderators determine to be inaccurate or objectionable will be removed without notice. Each user has the option of sharing his/her personal homepage and/or blog link through the user profile. These links may not direct users to a commercial and/or business-related website, direct users to a site that contains objectionable material, or be malicious in nature (e.g. links that crash a browser, trigger pop-up ads, etc.). Administrators reserve the right to remove inappropriate links without notice.
Each user is allowed up to one (1) line of text up to 120 characters in length in his/her signature. Signatures that are longer will be edited to fit on one line and to meet our character limits. URLs and images are not allowed in user signatures. If a user would like to share his homepage or blog information with other users, s/he may do so using the tools made available in the personal profile section. (See above section titled “Personal Profile.”) Signature text must be default size or smaller. If text is larger, administrators reserve the right to resize without warning. Rules regarding offensive/obscene content also apply to account signatures. (See above section titled “No Offensive Language/Flaming.”) Signatures may not be commercial in nature. Signatures that are found to violate these guidelines or which are deemed inflammatory, vulgar, or inappropriate will be removed by administrators. Users who violate these guidelines may be suspended or banned.
Do not post personal data such as email addresses, phone numbers, etc. in the forums. Where appropriate, you can put some of this information in your personal profile. Excerpts of email or private messages are not allowed. Anyone found posting another member’s personal details or website details without permission will be banned.
