Rappelling down a rope is not always done from the side of a mountain. I encounter the word MUCH more often as a soldier, Marine or other combatant rappelling down a rope from a helicopter into a combat zone, whether real, or as part of war games (i.e. practice). Over the last 50 years, this practice has nearly replaced parachuting into a combat zone.
Topic: commutation

The first thing I thought of was the internals of DC motors.

The second thing I thought of was the process of going to and from one's job by whatever means such as public transit, bicycle, etc.

Didn't think of commuting a prison sentence as fast as I thought of the other two.

On Google, my first answer is number Google's number two answer and your answer was #1. It is a word with multiple definitions.
