Topic: Is "dominant" the right word?
Posted: Tuesday, December 5, 2017 7:13:01 PM
In some senses, dominant describes an advantage that is given, whereas predominant describes an advantage that is taken. It's a very subtle distinction, though, and as in much of English, it's often better to prefer the shorter word to avoid sounding pompous.

"Moral putrefaction" is a metaphor. The ground of the metaphor is rotting organic matter, particularly animal matter. The given synonyms deprivation, depravity, and degeneracy are synonyms of the metaphor, not of the basic meaning of the word putrefaction. "Corruption" is the closest synonym, because one of its alternative meanings is rot.
