The Irrawaddy River

The Irrawaddy, or Ayeyarwady, is Myanmar's longest river and its most important commercial waterway. For many centuries, it was Myanmar's principal communication route. The 1,000-mile (1,600-km) river bisects the country from north to south and empties into the Indian Ocean through a vast, nine-armed delta, which is one of the world's great rice-producing regions. The Mingun Pagoda (in back) on the Ayeyarwady River near Mandalay, Burma

The name "Ayeyarwaddy" is believed to have derived from the Sanskrit term "airavati", meaning "elephant river".

Hindu-related0 name of this Burmese river suggests that India influenced Burma even before the introduction of Buddhism.

Here is a short history, Mate.
About 50,000 years ago, human beings started to populate this region (South Asia/Southeast Asia) from the Indian subcontinent and they brought along their way of life.

In the modern time (which is still very long time ago) they are called Austronesian. They settled in Burma, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam Cambodia, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, New Zealand and all the way to Hawaii and Africa.

In the beginning most were animist and later replaced by Hinduism, Theravada Buddhism (which is the oldest recorded Buddhist texts), and in the 15th century Islam.

If you travel in these countries you will see that most of the streets, old landmarks and places have Sanskrit names. Even in the biggest Muslim country in the world (Indonesia) most names are in Sanskrit.
