The Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House is a famous California mansion that is reputed to be haunted. Sarah Winchester, the widow of a gun magnate, began building the Winchester Mystery House in 1884 after a medium advised her to construct a house to appease the ghosts of all those killed by Winchester rifles. Construction continued for 38 years, since Sarah Winchester believed that if she stopped working on the house, she would die. What significance does the number 13 have in the mansion? More...

The Number 13
Which many believe was intended to ward off the Haunted Souls

The Number 13

Whether or not one believes in Mrs. Winchester’s superstitions about spirits, it’s harder to dismiss occurrences of the number 13 throughout the house. Many windows have 13 panes and there are 13 bathrooms, with 13 windows in the 13th Bathroom. There are also 13 wall panels in the room prior to the 13th Bathroom, and 13 steps leading to that bathroom. The Carriage Entrance Hall floor is divided into 13 cement sections. There are even 13 hooks in the Séance Room, which supposedly held the different colored robes Mrs. Winchester wore while communing with the spirits.

It’s interesting to note that Mrs. Winchester’s will had 13 parts and was signed by her 13 times!

Here are even more thirteens: 13 rails by the floor-level skylight in the South Conservatory, 13 steps on many of the stairways, 13 squares on each side of the Otis electric elevator, 13 glass cupolas on the Greenhouse, 13 holes in the sink drain covers, 13 ceiling panels in some of the rooms, and 13 gas jets on the Ballroom chandelier. (Mrs. Winchester had the thirteenth one added!)

Then there were occurrences that defied explanation. Neighbors would hear a bell ring at midnight and 2 a.m., which according to ghost lore are the times for the arrival and departure of spirits. Some said that Mrs. Winchester never slept in the same bedroom two nights in a row, in order to confuse any evil spirits that might be waiting for her. At the very center of the house is the Blue Room, where Mrs. Winchester supposedly would go every night to commune with the spirits. This room consisted of a cabinet, a table with pen and papers, a closet, and a planchette board – used for transmitting messages from the beyond. Legend has it that she would wear one of 13 special colored robes and receive guidance from various spirits for her construction plans.

I LIVED IN THE APARTMENTS RIGHT NEXT TO THE WINCHESTER HOUSE ON WINCHESTER BLVD. THE TOUR LADY FOR YEARS WAS OUR NEIGHBOR. MY WIFE AND I WERE GIVEN FREE PASSES TO THE HOUSE. WALKING THROUGH THE HOUSE WOULD MESSERIZE YOUR THOUGHTS. SURLEY A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE TO WITNESS THE STAIRS TO NOWHERE, THE ORIGINAL STAND UP SHOWER, TOO MANY ARTIFACTS TO RE-ACCOUNT. BEAUTY IN EVERY ROOM AND EVERY TURN SOMETHING MISTIC EVERYWHERE. QUITE AN EXPERIENCE TO NEVER FORGET. IF IN THE AREA I WOULD SURELY RE-VISIT.

In my travels, I have encountered more than a few unexplained eerie things. Sometimes it could have been just my mind playing tricks on me, but for the most of the times there were other people with me who experienced (saw/felt) the same things.

I still get goose bumps whenever I this memories come alive in my thoughts.
