In diving to the bottom of pleasure we bring up more gravel than pearls.

There are more grave consequences than dredging gravel from the bottom of whatever... Yeah, bottoms up!

King Solomon afforded himself every pleasure available before declaring (of even the pursuit of wisdom), "I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind."
Hedonism always leaves you unsatisfied because there is no genuine meaning or fulfillment in simply serving yourself. That's the "gravel" - the realization that the pursuit of your own desires and cravings leaves you wanting.
The "pearls" are found in serving others, investing in the lives of others, and finding fulfillment when you finally learn to focus on something beyond yourself.

Good quote. We should be careful about following our 'hearts' and our 'joys' because the path they lead us down could end in a dark and sinister place. It's better to find the source of our pleasure and determine whether it helps or hurts others, whether it is greedy or selfless, whether it builds up or tears down. We are all animals whether we recognize this fact or not. We have animal desires and behaviors. But even animals can show compassion and affection. So it's not too late for humanity as well.

Happiness, true happiness, is an inner quality. It is a state of mind. If your mind is at peace, you are happy. If your mind is at peace, but you have nothing else, you can be happy. If you have everything the world can give - pleasure, possessions, power - but lack peace of mind, you can never be happy.

Worse yet, the few pearls we take with us to the bottom are lost in the mud of pleasure.
