A pompous person is arrogant or conceited. He'll walk into a party with an inflated ego, ready to tell anyone who will listen that "I'm kind of a big deal."

Today we associate the adjective pompous with self-important jerks. But it's actually derived from the Old French pompeux, which meant “stately." And that's why you can also use pompous to describe something with a lot of ceremonial or stately display — in other words, something surrounded by "pomp and circumstance."

There is a type of snobbish, pompous journalist who thinks that the only news that has any validity is war, famine, pestilence or politics. I don't come from that school.

Anyone who thinks they're important is usually just a pompous moron who can't deal with his or her own pathetic insignificance and the fact that what they do is meaningless and inconsequential.

A lot of Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Sex-addicts Anonymous are endlessly pompous judgmentally resentful people who do not have decency to give their director positions to healthy people of good character and integrity, but tell lies against healthy people of good character and true humility.

In reply to Shamshad Ali Afridi: The problem is that people who are pompous
do not realize that they are *pompous*; and thus their pitiable behavior. And
most generally, they are not thinking about their *death*, but their feelings of
insignificance in the here and now and their lack of stature in the eyes of their
fellow beings which relentlessly propels them dauntless on with their b. s.
But then there *are*,
of course, the true idiots, who really *do* believe
in their inflated self-importance, and who perhaps *do* - by the standards of our society -
have titles and fame or accolades to flourish like ostrich feathers beneath the noses of others,
but *yet* do not
realize they are NOTHING but dandelions and mean nothing in the end.
The incredible thing is: they really do not know what really matters in the end.
