Beethoven's Ninth Symphony Premiers in Vienna (1824)The Symphony No. 9 in D Minor is the last complete symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. One of the best known works of the Western repertoire, it is considered one of Beethoven's greatest masterpieces. Incorporating part of Johann Schiller's "Ode to Joy," sung by soloists and a chorus, it is the first symphony in which a major composer utilizes human voices on the same level as instruments. I'm watching a performance of Beethoven's Ninth later on today! It's the season finale of the orchestra's 50th anniversary, and they wanted to go out with a bit of a celebratory bang, so I think Beethoven's Ninth is definitely a fitting choice. Funny that they didn't mention anything about the date. I guess they left it out to be rendered witty by the enlightened. Anyways, it's going to be massive and I'm really looking forward to it.

Reportedly five standing ovations followed the premier performance. And I have recently enjoyed a performance of Symphony No. 9 in D minor as well Praine.

One of the treasures of humankind.

I wasn't at the premier, but I partipated in a matinee performance back in high school. There were no standing ovations but there was some applause when we ended...possibly because we ended.
Apologies to Beethoven.
