Give up thinking as though not giving it up. Observe the techniques as though not observing... Emphasize a repetitious drilling of economical form to acquire instinctive initiation, speed and length of power and penetration. Remember that acceleration can be increased by sheer practice and will power. Mechanical repetition is the basis of this. Lunge two or three hundred times per day, faster and faster each time.

There's the similar question, to what purpose you are a thinking man? Don't you think so?

It seems a more valid and interesting Q than Coleridge's...

The context from : The Complete Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Volume 1 The Author's Preface

Reader, you have been bred in a land abounding with men able in arts, learning, and knowledges manifold: this man in one, this in another; few in many, none in all. But there is one art of which every man should be a master,—the art of reflection. If you are not a thinking man, to what purpose are you a man at all? In like manner, there is one knowledge which it is every man’s duty and interest to acquire, namely, self-knowledge. Or to what end was man alone, of all animals, endued by the Creator with the faculty of self-consciousness?

I love Coleridge's poetry, & I love this quote. Thanks as usual to monamagda for providing the context. I couldn't work out where this quote came from. Applause

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834)

To what purpose are we thinking beings?!

If we were all thinking with several types of intelligence cooperatively, we would all know essentially that the sick control/sick illusion of power of some evil/narrow-minded/ intelligence does not make them superior, but self-destructive and destructive of others whom they call "enemies" (there must be an "enemy" - or - else their manipulative game would not be plausible in the minds of people who are discouraged from using several types of intelligence cooperatively - (but they so pitifully call themselves "superior").

This generalized statement by Coleridge, can be interpreted in many ways.

What kind of thinking is going on inside one's head, whether emotional intelligence is used to include others in a positive manner or to malign others and brainwash and buy people (with money/perks/privileges that no pacifists/conscientious objectors can get) into a military devious indoctrination of the upside-down history which the cave dwellers (Plato is still unknown to many simple-minded people who revere the military who brainwashed them, and instilled fear in them.}
still see as necessary.

Along with what kind of thinking goes in one's head is the question of what kind of purpose is behind that thinking driven by what kind of motif.

Good/progressive purpose or evil/negative purpose to serve only a few "selective services" - Ha, ha!

Is a motif greed, sick "power", sick "control", conceit? or is a motif to have a healthy, sharing, energized goodness that like laser takes away lies, greed, sick "power/control"...

When cave dwellers learn how to think, then nobody will join the military. The military takes away money from the population rights to free medical insurance.
The military is number one cause of homelessness, both material and spiritual poverty because they paralyze
population with fear, and then "offer" (ha,ha) them money to "join." But the military like to scare the population of "overpopulation" and how "wars are hygiene" of the sick military mind that wants money, etc...

Their bullying, sick propaganda never says that the military are a part of that surplus population! Why don't they rid the Earth of themselves! For thousands of years they have been inventing/creating enemies to convince their underlings how people in other countries are bad. The same dirty work is done by the military in those other countries telling their people how you as people are bad so that they can pay the military dirty money to fight for their "dirty" purpose of greed an sick power/control.

Have you been reading The Rime of the Ancient Mariner while taking the substances Coleridge took while writing Kublai Khan?

By the way, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner always makes me think of an euphemism for crusty old seaman/semen. Whistle
(It's the use of the word "rime" that gets me.)

Others are not thinking individuals but they don't realise their terrible disposition. Such attitudes are dangerous
