Later renamed the Swansea and Mumbles Railway, the line was approved to carry passengers in 1807. The world's first regular passenger service began that same year and operated in one form or another for more than a century and a half before it was decommissioned. What powered the line's first trains? More...

Thus, interestingly, the first passenger railway was horse-drawn. Looks like the idea of railway as we know it predated its actual materialization.

Railways meant the end for canals and coaches. Railways were to transform Britain in the nineteenth century. Wagons pulled along on tracks had existed for some while, but these wagons had been pulled by horses. Advances in railways took place throughout the nineteenth century, the stem-locomotive soon made an appearance on the scene

Horse-drawn tramway

The Mumbles Railway was built as an industrial in 1804-5, and became the first railway in the world to regularly carry passengers in 1807. Horses were used up until 1896, but steam locos first came into use in 1877. The electric tramcars many people remember took over from 1929 until closure in 1960.
