Eventually "worth living for" is more difficult to find/perform than "dying for".

Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib (ع) said the following: Even if I strike those of a believer with this, my sword, so he may hate me, he will not hate me, and even if I pile all the wealth of the world before a hypocrite (Muslim) so he may love me, he will not love me. This is so because it is a verdict pronounced by the tongue of the revered Prophet (ص) who said the following: "O Ali! A believer will never hate you and a hypocrite (Muslim) will never love you."

Interestingly, in Judaism - the source of the world famous adage "love your friend as you love yourself" - it is ethically wrong to DIE for a friend or anyone else, close and beloved as they may be.

The world loves talent but pays off on character. (John Gardner, 1982)

Yet it is unfortunately so easy finding recruits willing to murder and die for a belief or promise.

It's a fake!
Homer did never write something like that and the 'quotes' in internet refers (when they does!) to something completely different ('Odyssey book VI (Nausicaa) v. 107!!!)

Misquote!!

This quote is not Homero1's it is HENRY HOME :

Introduction to the art of thinking, to which is prefixed an original life ...
By Henry Home (lord Kames.)

The difficulty is not so great to die for a friend as to find a friend worth dying for.

Thanks, monamagda.

I have not read the late Henry Home's book. The title, "Introduction to the art of thinking," is interesting indeed.

Thank you GianMarco and Monamagda. My fruitless search of Iliad and Odyssey for this quote has been driving me crazy. It could, of course, relate to Achilles and Patroclus but no English translator of Homer has produced such an apothegm.

That is a good topic for a philosophical debate.

I would not want such a good friend to die for me. Such a friend would not be happy if I did such a thing.Eh?

Dying is easy. Would you give up everything and go on living with nothing to help you start over? Think

Does "giving up everything" mean the friend too? d'oh!

The difficulty of finding a friend worth anything may reside in one's overblown self-worth.
