Sinulog Festival

The Sinulog Festival takes place on the island of Cebu in the Philippines, held at the same time as the frenzied Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo and the more sedate Dinagyang in Iloilo City. The festival celebrates both early Cebuano culture and the history of the Christianization of Cebu, combining the pageantry of early years with today's Christian ritual. An image of Cebu's patron saint, the Santo Niño ("the Holy Child," Jesus), is carried in a procession along the streets, while drums beat in the ritual for a bountiful harvest and revelers dance in the streets. Calibration? If that's a pun, I don't get it. Autocorrect error?

CELEBRATION OF FAITH. Sinulog celebrates the Cebuanos' Catholic faith and honors the Santo Niño or the Holy Child Jesus with a dance spectacle on the streets of Cebu City. (Photo by Mikhael Arrogante used with permission from the Sinulog Foundation)

Culture

Beyond its splendor and gaiety, the Sinulog has come to represent a people and a culture, said Sinulog Foundation executive director Ricky Ballesteros.
“Sinulog is synonymous with Cebu and the Cebuanos. It gives us a name. When you say Cebu, you think Sinulog. When you say Sinulog, you think Cebu,” said Ballesteros.
From its humble beginnings in 1980, the Sinulog Festival has grown over and above a single individual or group to become the pride and responsibility of all Cebuanos.
Through it, the Cebuanos truly move to one beat and follow one vision.
