Fatal Familial Insomnia

Fatal familial insomnia is a rare genetic disease that interferes with sleep and eventually leads to death. The disease is the result of mutations in a certain protein, which cause plaques to build up in the thalamus, the brain region responsible for sleep regulation. Patients initially suffer from insomnia and progressively develop more serious problems—including hallucinations, rapid weight loss, and dementia—before dying. In how many families has the gene that causes the disease been found? More...

Longest I've ever stayed awake was 48hrs and that was horrible. I cant imagine staying awake so long I hallucinate and get dementia.

My beef strong.

Oh, what a terrible disease!!! Both sides of my family suffer regular insomnia and we take Melatonin, which works well. This fatal disease is a waking nightmare

I never suffered from insomnia, but I have Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea. If I don't use my CPAP machine (continuous positive airway pressure) for one night, that night and the next day turn into a real nightmare. Many of us could have different sleep disorders like Apnea or Catalepsy without knowing antyhing about them.

Mine was a daily headache for about 2 or 3 years until I found it was Apena and it had a cure (well, an eternal treatment)... At first I thought I was just stuck in some kind of depression; the whole day I would fell asleep any-and-everywhere, from the classroom to the bus to an ongoing conversation, never finding relief in sleep. My last semester at the Philsosophy school went through a hole along with my social life, I almost had a fatal accident trying to drive and I can't hardly remember anything good that happened to me those years. These things are serious.
