Friends do influence the quality of a person....so there is a need to be careful while choosing a friend....

I believe this post was actually more referring to the first portion because most people judge someone by those they choose to keep as company. However, it is rarely looked at who a person does not get along. The reasons for the two being enemies and/or the traits of the enemy show more of what the man is not, which the friends do not.

Unfortunately some friends are enemies in disguise.

Mohamed is correct in that some people do pretend to be your friend but yet are enemies in disguise. Can you tell someone by their enemies. Well when the enemies state openly why they are dislike the person, you can make some judgment. Hercule Poirot used to say that you could tell more of a person from the lies they told, but he was only a fictional detective.

Right.- We all have friends and enemies and both of them have something to say about us, therefore anybody wanting to have a balanced opinion about us should listen to both bells and draw their own conclusions.- Only fair

He is one true master of English words. When I read him I feel what he felt while almost forget it is through his words.

I think he is alluding to a Jing Jang approach. A balanced look at a man's nature.
Friends come and go but enemies tend to collect.

"" You perceive the force of a word. He who wants to persuade should put his trust not in the right argument, but in the right word. The power of sound has always been greater than the power of sense.
I don’t say this by way of disparagement. It is better for mankind to be impressionable than reflective."" From Conrad's autobiographical work: "A Personal Record".

In "Lord Jim", where the quotation of this thread comes from, Conrad's narrator Marlowe tells a story of repeated attempts at redemption, even as words persuade us that Jim may well be, ethically, above the need for
absolution by an unjust-- or more so hateful fate. What worse foe does one ever have the distinction of being judged by, one's friends notwithstanding?

Failing that, you shall judge him by his words, the empty ones in particular.
