Charles Darwin Sets Sail on HMS Beagle

The theory of evolution, which Darwin first expressed in On the Origin of Species, was the result of his discoveries as a naturalist on board the HMS Beagle. His book explained evolution through the principles of natural selection and aroused widespread debate among scientists and religious leaders. Darwin spent the rest of his life studying the results of that expedition and developing his theory of evolution. What debilitating disease might he have contracted during the voyage? More...

Darwin might have picked up a parasite on that trip that left him with the chronic digestive problems which he was known to suffer later in his life.

Many bright scientists could not see even the possibility of life forms evolving. Darwin not only supposed such possibility, but also scientifically proved the fact of evolution.

I believe in evolution. I believe in God. The two are not mutually exclusive. There were dinosaurs in the earth's past. The earth is millions of years old. Who can deny the scientific evidence? God wanted to use millions of years to create man. Why so long? Who understands time?Who can understand the mind of God? I am happy to be here and enjoy life.

Darwin's findings pointed in the direction of natural selection being an explanation for evolution. The scientific method never "proves" a theory such as Darwin's with a single experiment or set of observations, but good practice of the method points to further experiments. By incremental additions, these further experiments can add support to the theory. Findings from DNA sequencing, in combination with such observations as fossil sequences are providing much of the recent support.
