Samuel Mudd

Mudd was the physician who set the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth, Abraham Lincoln's assassin, just hours after Booth fled the crime scene. A Confederate sympathizer, Mudd was accused of aiding Booth's escape and tried along with Booth's other accomplices. Throughout, Mudd maintained that he had not recognized the disguised Booth, an acquaintance of his, and had been unaware of the assassination, but he was nonetheless convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. "Your name is mud" is something I grew up hearing. When my mother was calling me in for chores and I hid in the barn. When my brother found me that is exactly how he phrased the punishment I was about to endure. "You better get in the house. Your name is mud." I never knew who my namesake was.

The family attempted for many years to clear Dr. Mudd of intentional complicity in aiding Booth's escape. Richard Mudd, who died in 2002 at the age of 101, was the most recent descendant to devote serious effort to this cause. He managed to get the U.S. Army to support a retrial on the basis of the technicality that the doctor should have been tried in civilian court. The U.S. Supreme Court refused to review the case in 2003, stating that too much time had elapsed for a rehearing.
