The sentence is taken from "The 39 steps".
In the last chapter, there were 3 men who the leading character "Hannay" suspected to be spies and who killed Scudder.
Hannay couldn't really identify three men for sure for the crime but suspected only.
The three men denied of the crime, of course. They spoke German.
Later on the day when the night was drawing, they couldn't avoid revealing their true identity as it was their day for the escape after they completed their mission.
"Der Schwarze Stein ist in der Siegeskrone' was said by one of the man when the second guy made an escape to the boat.

Black stone possibly is the name of "their secret plot/mission/project" or the gang's name.

--> The black stone is in the 'victory crown'.

I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger. (Anon)

correction of my wrong usages of English language.

denied of the crime--->denied their involvement in the crime
one of the man ---> one of the men
