Table Tennis

Table tennis originated in 19th-century England and soon spread to several European countries and to the US. In 1926, the International Table Tennis Federation was founded to standardize rules and equipment. The sport won publicity in 1971 when a US team was invited to play in China, thereby initiating the first officially sanctioned Sino-American cultural exchange in almost 20 years. The answer is:

Early rackets were often pieces of parchment stretched upon a frame, and the sound generated in play gave the game its first nicknames of "wiff-waff" and "ping-pong".

Actually, gnip gnop would have been more onomatopoeic.

A great "sport" that I played almost excessively while on liberty with the US Navy. It also allowed me to meet some really fine shipmates from numerous countries, as well. That was of course before I began to "hit-the-bars" in those liberty towns. As my memory recalls, some of those American towns even had those really nice signs posted for us; "Dogs and sailors-keep off the grass". God-Damn I do "love" this sick country..... And now, as the police continue to shoot unarmed black men and children, I do believe this society has even become worse...then it was back in the 1950's. And to think I gave 7 years of my life for this country, and 30 % of my body.
