Gansabhauet

Gansabhauet is held only in the country town of Sursee, Lucerne Canton, Switzerland, on St. Martin's Day. A dead goose is hung by its neck in front of the town hall, and young men draw lots to take turns trying to knock it down with a blunt saber. (Gansabhauet means "knocking down goose.") The men—blindfolded and wearing red robes and big round masks representing the sun—get only one try at the bird. While the men whack at the goose, children's games take place: they scale a stripped tree, race in sacks, and compete to see who can make the ugliest face. More...

This seems a very absurd festival. It would be fun to participate in it, I think!

A gruesome piñata! You can't tell me there's not copious amounts of alcohol involved here.

Gansabhauet

Is there a specialist for Schwizerdütsch who could explain the suffix -et.
Is it a kind of definite article affixed to the end?
The other word elements are clear: Gans (goose), abhauen (to cut off);
So the sense of the word would be "the cutting off of the goose".

I think the -et suffix is close to the -ung ending in German, in the sense of describing an activity.

Take a look at the different rites for Martinmas all over Britain, Vincent.
Geese range rather prominent there.

HORRIBLE TRADITION!!

Gansabhauet [cutting down the goose from a rope] is an archaic tradtion in the country town Sursee near Lucerne, central Switzerland. The yearly event takes place in front of the old town hall at Rathausplatz every year on Martini [St. Martin's day, November, 11th] at 3 pm. Young people try their skills and fortune cutting a goose from a rope. The tradition is related to the fact that interests and taxes were due on Martini day in the middle ages and farmers had to deliver 10% of their crops in town.

Cutting a goose from a rope may sound trivial, but the rules of the game are as follows:
> Participants have to wear a blindfold and a mask symbolizing the sun
> The sword is rather edgeless
> Every participant has one try only
> There are about 80 participants and two geese only
> The sequence of participants is drawn by lot

Usually the first participant stands no chance to cut the goose from the rope, but if he or she does a good job, the second or third one may succeed. Participants are guided out of the town hall by a member of the guild organizing the event and two drummers play until the participant has found the rope. Winners take off their blindfold on stage, the other participants return into town hall under their mask.

Note that the geese are killed by professional butchers before the event begins so there is no cruelty to animals involved with this tradition.

Why don't they just put the ugliest face in the thickest sack, drink the martini and give the goose the day off ?
