Internet Addiction in Young Adults

The medical community remains divided on the existence of Internet addiction as a standalone psychological disorder, but support is growing. Studies suggest that Internet addiction is physiologically similar to other types of addiction, and a recent survey finds that 16 percent of young adults exhibit symptoms of Internet addiction, including spending inordinate amounts of time—more than 15 hours a day—online. Still, the American Psychiatric Association has yet to recognize Internet addiction as an independent condition in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). More...

I'm not part of that statistic, but I live with my family who spends too much time on line. It has become very difficult to have a conversation as they are immersed in their technology, ignoring the people who are present and dare I say, what they're doing is not always in productive mode. Just recently, my daughter's husband sent me a letter with a littany of complaints... He lives five seconds away!! All that to say that communication has been assigned a new definition. It's easy to hide behind the written word. Also, the immediacy of being connected to a great deal of trivia makes me crazy!

Internet Addiction in Young Adults, is and will always be a problem, as long as there are the distractive "games" attached to almost every program that exists on the internet. But it is not the internet parse that is the problem but rather the desire and ability to escape reality; which also is a problem as well, for numerous adults. The problem, in most cases is due to the falsehood's perpetrated by society and cultures that are later discovered by people of all ages to be lies... Though I believe if freedoms for choosing, it is the basic foundations for and in life that will dictate the direction of an individual.
