Boris Yeltsin Orders Tanks to Storm Russian Parliament (1993)

As president of an independent Russia, Boris Yeltsin sought to end state control of the economy but clashed with parliament, which was controlled by former Communists. When Yeltsin suspended the parliament, it retaliated by naming Vice President Aleksandr Rutskoi as acting president, and anti-Yeltsin forces barricaded themselves inside the parliament building. The military interceded on Yeltsin's side and, after a bloody battle, troops recaptured the parliament building. What was the death toll? More...

Russian politics is some pretty "different" stuff. The word "force," comes to mind.

I thought Yeltsin was too busy ordering shots to remember that he had tanks. Maybe he ordered 'Tanquerays' and the whole evening just got outta hand...

According to government estimates, 187 people were killed and 437 wounded, while sources close to Russian communists put the death toll at as high as 2,000.

The poor Russian people.

When, oh when, will they get a decent human being as their leader?!

Will Russia ever get their shit together as a country? Will Japan seek healing for its violent little robot girl fetish? Will people ever stop paying attention to whatever the hell the United States does or doesn't do? Will Britain continue to lose its civil liberties and vanquish its ethical health care system? Find out next week on the farce that is your planet!

The outbreak of violence on October 3, 1993, left almost 140 people dead. For Muscovites it was a horrifying day, as Russia stood on the brink of a civil war.
Yeltsin assumed total power as presidential ruler, down to holding the elections of the Federal Assembly and a referendum on Russia's Constitution. Elections for the State Duma were held on December 12, 1993. At the same time a referendum on the new Constitution took place, in which Russia was declared a democratic, federal state with a republican government.

This should occur here in the U.S. as the radical republican-religious-right will never do what is right nor correct for the populous, as long as WE HAVE GIVEN THEM the ability to write their own salaries', health insurance & retirement packages. It is time to rethink the direction of this country; and yes, if force is necessary, so be it....

Bloomberg Businessweek reports that a growing number (it did not give numbers) of educated, middle-class Russians are emigrating to other countries (especially Latvia) to get away from Putin's Russia.

I surely wish that the United States would encourage those Russians to come here.

This country needs immigrants like them.

This country should really do more to encourage immigration from Western Europe, where, I hear, many people are unhappy about certain things.
