Why then love turn cold sometimes? Why does love turn to hate so easily? Why some love spells are so short? What's wrong with us?

How poignant! How true! Real love never dies. Nor does it turn cold--ever, nor does it turn into hate. If love is a "spell," then it is emotion--not pure love. Love is altruistic. It never seeks self. It always seeks to love the beloved as the beloved, and not as some reflection or image or idea or ideal of oneself.

I have experienced such love in my lifetime--a few times. And yes! It does reveal the face of God!

Thank you, Victor Hugo, for this wonderful quotation!

Be the change you wish to see in the world!-Gandhi

I can't stand quotations like this. They just appeal to the emotions.

Only when the love is based on physical & material desires it may turn cold. Because, the physical & material things do change and usually deteriorate & diminish, so does the love based on them. True ethereal love is always blissful and everlasting fountain of joy.

Emotions are what makes a human. Without emotions, empathy, and feelings, beings turn out be inhuman robots. Whistle Whistle

I'm with MechPebbles on this one. I think it's sentimental drivel.
Where specifically does this quote come from? I've read The Hunchback of Notre Dame & Les Miserables, both brilliant books, but I don't recognise this quote. Perhaps he put it in the mouth of one of his characters? In which case, it doesn't necessarily mean it sums up Hugo's feelings, just the character's.

What kind of person should I love? This is what I miss in this quote!

Should I love everybody? Even a person who hates me? Should I love a person who harms me? Nonsense.

To love someone with your entire self is magical when returned. No matter how deep & true your love of any human it will Never resemble the face of God.

God is your creator. You & every other human is His creature. The Bible tells us those who look upon the face of God shall die. Hugo was a great author, but not worth dying over.

I hope you find this useful:

I have often wondered if Hugo was drunk when he wrote this phrase.

Regardless of your concept of god, to love another person is to experience the best of yourself! Generous, trusting, compassionate, devoted, faithful.....
Yourself closest to your own divinity!!!

If we are created in the image of God, then to love someone is to see them as they truly are... a beloved divine child of God. And are not our children the image of us? The same as or able to be greater than us? Then as children of God... are we not God?

And for the fool who says its nonsense to love the one who harms us... my child harmed me terribly during birth, yet I do withhold my love. To love God is to love all things... whether your limited mind deems them "harmful" or not... or you might as well hate the night and love the day, and hate all that is down and love all that is up, and loathe all the left and love all the right... All exists because of it's opposite.. the universe is YIN and YANG and BOTH are equally needed and equally created by God, so to not love anything created by God is to not love God and Self and to be nonthinking and hidebound.

1 Corinthians 13
(New American Standard Bible)

The Excellence of Love

1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Victor Hugo (great writer that he was) never bettered it and neither can I.

Jesus died for my sins, because God loved me before I ever acknowledged He existed. Thank you Lord.
