squelch

(verb) Suppress or crush completely.

Synonyms: quell, quench

Usage: The president ruled his country with an iron fist and had a special task force whose duty it was to squelch any sign of dissent.

I love this word. It always makes me think of physically squashing whatever it is one is squelching (go Christine). I also think the word sounds like walking in mud: squelch, squelch, squelch.

You can squelch something but it just pops up in another place~ like weeds.
