Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. As a peacemaker the lawyer has superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough.

By repetition, I impress the lesson taught by Mr. President:

Laws can carry any burden we wish. All that's required is agreement and a tradition upon which to build our mutual respect. There will still be business enough ... Above all, the art of government is the mastery of chaos.

For some enough is too little. Besides, there's the opposite problem: decisions postponed, tension build up - conflict comes to a new level.

Never thought of lawyers as peacemakers somehow. I wonder did they take heed.

Litigation is a tool for making lasting enemies. It is always better to solve problems by peaceable means. Being good to one's enemies is a soothing balm in the corridors of life. And the sooner one learns this valuable lesson, the happier one is!

Cited in Abraham Lincoln: Complete Works, Comprising his Speeches, Letters, State Papers, and Miscellaneous Writings (Vol. 2), 1894.

"Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. Point out to them how the nominal winner is often a real loser — in fees, expenses, and waste of time. As a peacemaker the lawyer has a superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough.
Never stir up litigation. A worse man can scarcely be found than one who does this. Who can be more nearly a fiend than he who habitually overhauls the register of deeds in search of defects in titles, whereon to stir up strife, and put money in his pocket? A moral tone ought to be infused into the profession which should drive such men out of it.

Moar! Unfortunately, that trumps being good the vast majority of the time... that and convenience.

The best way to control the opposition is to finance it. Birds of prey have two wings; the left wing & right wing.

Litigation is a contest of egos, not a pursuit of justice.
There are few lawyers and politicians who don’t become shysters because of their desire to win by the strength of their knowledge and skills, instead of the strength of the truth.
