battue

(noun) Indiscriminate slaughter.

Synonyms: bloodbath, bloodletting, bloodshed

Usage: This lonely spot, once used for an extempore burying-place, after a sanguinary battue between the French and Austrians, is the perfection of desolation.

Interesting choice of word...I just read a horrifying article that not only sickens me, but fits this word perfectly.
The intensity of mortification...oooohhhhhh!!!!!
...my heart cries for this poor woman/child...Once again, the mentally unstable have been preyed upon by the demented sick souls.

Yes,reiki333 it is an interesting word that, before now,I had never heard or seen. I have an image from Iran on CNN of a protestor eing beat by police rom "Assaut and Battery", a crime. Sanguinary battue, definition given , I have yet to ponder.Battue fom the english or french to beat. I suppose Gettysburg would be such a place.

I lose my spelling checker when I go on this site. It is not on my toolbar when I press Word of the Day.

I am shock that your definitions are so limited on the word today, BATTUE.
Other websites have other definitions that would have been informative to have included to expand your definition as "Indiscriminate slaughter".

Look at this from another website....
..........
. Hunting.
a. the beating or driving of game from cover toward a stationary hunter.
b. a hunt or hunting party using this method of securing game.
2. undiscriminating slaughter of defenseless or unresisting crowds.

I have to check other website to really get the real definitions of your words you define each day.
Are you trying to misinform your readers?
Hope you will expand your definitions for the words, in the future.
