The history of the European Union (EU) began soon after WWII, when there developed in Europe a strong revulsion against national rivalries and parochial loyalties. with the success of the US it's amazing it took Europe so long.

Europe had some 2,500 years history with multiple ethnic groups, languages, and national interests by the time it united.
The USA had about 100 years history, and was composed of British, Germans, and Dutch (Native Americans and African slaves didn't count), when they formed the Union.
